Indian Robin

This bird is small in size with a lovely chirpy sound. It is found all over the Indian continent. I spotted this bird in Raigad area of Maharasthra.This bird was discovered by a French zoologist Mathurin Jacques brission in 1760. The males are glossy black. The females are brown in color. It is mainly seen in dry grass areas. They mostly on insects, frogs and lizards. The breeding period is from September to December. In north India it is in June. In Shri lanka breeding period is from march to June males sing during this season by lowering and spreading their tail. Nest is built between rocks or in a tree hollow and are lined with animal hair. The eggs are oval in shape. 3 to 4 eggs in a clutch. The incubation is done by the female. It takes 12 days. Both male and female feed the young. The main attraction is the orange patch below the tail.
