Brown Fish Owl
The brown fish owl was formally described by German Naturalist Johann Fredrich Gmelin in 1788. It has beautiful ear tuffs and brown upper parts. The body size ranges from 48 to 61 cms with a wingspan of 125 to 140cms. It is a all year resident in Indian subcontinent. The breeding season is from November to April. They use the nest deserted by fish eagles or vultures. The clutch consists of 1 to 2 eggs. Incubation period is 38 days. The chicks fledge after seven weeks. Apparently in India during the festival of Diwali thousands of owls are killed through programs to counter this practice are under way, including this species due to superstitious beliefs about the evil nature owls and as an attempt to gain power of black magic.
