Indian grey hornbill

Hornbills are some what awkward while moving in the canopy. Mainly frugivorious they also pick up small and animals if they can. During breeding the female walls herself up to the lay and incubate the eggs. She loses her tail feathers and is completely dependent on the male for food. Their habit of making large nest holes in large trees along with their slow breeding rate has led to a rapid decline in most species. The Indian grey hornbill has a prominent pointed casque with light grey head, a pale bushy brow that goes all the way down the nape and dark ear coverts. It has grey upper parts with white tips. The tail is grey with a black terminal band and a white tip. The neck and breast are grey which fades into white lower belly and vent. The male has a dark bill and a yellow lower mandible. The female has a smaller yellow bill with much reduced casque. This species preferred habitat is large trees in open forest wooded parts, institutions and monument grounds and even large avenue trees.
