Purple Swamp hen
This large robust purple bird has grey on its head with turquise blue on the throat, breast and wings has white undertail coverts which are visible as it frequently bobs the tail. The female is similar but smaller. The juvenile has brownish upper parts a dark bill and a shield that is not well defined. The chick is downy black. It is mainly herbivorous. This bird feeds on seeds, tubers,shoots, and leaves of aquatic plants, it also eats insects, repties, fish , young birds and also their eggs. This bird utters a soft chuck chuck sound, While it swims the purple swamphen mostly feeds by wading and using its large feet to manipulate food items. The purple swamphen makes varied grunts and explosive rattles during its courtship while breeding in pre monsoon season.
